Regen Melbourne's transitional infrastructure and Doughnut Economics

The Doughnut in Practice

How can we apply Doughnut Economics to inform the narratives and decision-making associated with strategies and projects in practice?

The Doughnut in Practice
Project overview

From vision to action

Since the release of the Greater Melbourne City Portrait, we have been considering what it means to put Doughnut Economics into practice. As part of this, we have distinguished between Doughnut Economics as a framework and the City Portrait as an application of it at a metro scale. As a result, this work can be viewed in two streams: first, thinking about how the Doughnut as a framework might be taken up across sectors in our city, and second, strengthening the connection between the picture painted by the City Portrait and Regen Melbourne’s own work. We are progressing the first part of this work by centring the Doughnut in our public engagement and visioning activities. The second part of this is focused on how our Earthshots and the enablers within the Systems Lab can more explicitly link to the City Portrait in order to inform our narratives and decision-making approaches.

Our role

Bringing the doughnut to life

Together with Dr Michael Dunbar at RMIT, we are co-leading internal and external-facing explorations of the Doughnut in practice, with the expectation that learning from our experience can inform how other places progress similar ideas and approaches.
